Beginner'S GUIDE TO WATCH STRAPS
Watch straps are more important than you think.
A proper strap is an essential companion to any watch, and switching it out is an easy way to experiment with a whole new style. A broad and diverse strap collection can greatly extend the number of combinations available to you; to an observer, the band is often more visible than the face of the watch, so a large assortment of straps will make a small collection of watches appear truly enormous. By their very nature, watch straps are often considerably cheaper than an entirely new watch, so it is often more cost-effective to expand one’s collection of straps over splurging on another watch. That’s not to say one shouldn’t own an assortment of watches — just make sure you don’t neglect that which connects them to your wrist.
StyleS
Leather
Leather strap is probably the most versatile material choice, available in colours that span the rainbow and straddling both casual and smart. Much like a leather jacket. The best leather and bracelet straps are European, with Italy, Germany and Switzerland making the best.
Milanese
As their name implies, Milanese watch straps were originally developed in Milan, Italy. The straps themselves are easily distinguished by their extremely dense and tightly woven mesh construction, which makes them some of the smoothest metal straps on the market. Milanese straps are an excellent choice for all-around wear. They work just as well with contemporary watches as they do vintage ones.
Sizing
Lug Width
Check the inside of your current strap to see if the size is indicated. If the size is identified, and the strap fits well, you can simply purchase the same size.
You can also measure the distance between the watch lugs in millimeters (mm). Make sure you measure from the inside of the lugs. It is better to measure the distance between the watch lugs than the actual strap width as this will give you a more precise measurement.
Strap Length
You can measure the length around your wrist using seamstress tape or printable ruler.
Keep in mind that you will need to factor in the width of your watch case when determining the total strap length needed.
You should also remember that two piece straps can be adjusted smaller when buckled so it is okay if the strap length is somewhat longer than needed.
